Giovanni Verga, born in 1976, started to play piano at a young age and studied classical music.
In the early ‘90s he began to DJ in private parties all over Sicily. Since then he has worked as a DJ in the main Sicilian and Italian clubs, performing eclectic sets that usually went from chill out music to techno, going thru Detroit-house and getting inspired from jazz, funk, dub, trip hop and also all kind of avant-garde music. He ran a few projects as producer and performer with other DJ’s and musicians like "Hub" a project focused on minimal with a Latin groove feeling. "Hub" was based in Berlin for the summer 2007 and completed a full EP for the label synergy-networks. They also played a few gigs in places like Bar 25, Bar 23, and private parties. Another project is "Cupis", a duo with the saxophone player Gianni Gebbia, focused on performing with video-makers, visual artists and contemporary dancers. Finally "Folkalab", a collective of several musicians from the Sicily’s scene, a meeting point for different generations of artists and a real exchange in between different musical cultures, using both new and old technologies. In the latest years, collaboration with the moviemaker Michel Ferrà leads him to compose soundtracks for some of his films. Giovani Verga always maintained his interest in studying music, attending several jazz courses and graduating in "d.a.m.s" (disciplines of arts and music) at the University of Palermo in 2004. He considers his music in constant evolution and he always tries to study different ways and languages to put deep and real feelings into it. He often plays live sets with musicians from Palermo’s improvisation scene and he never misses a chance to explore and experiment new forms of inspiration that he uses for his sets and studio work. |
